Nicholas Manton, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge,Nicholas Mee, Director of software company Virtual ImageNicholas Manton studied theoretical physics and mathematics at the University of Cambridge and gained his Ph.D. in 1978. Following postdoctoral positions at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and University of California, Santa Barbara, he returned to Cambridge and is now Professor of Mathematical Physics in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. He is also head of the department's High Energy Physics group, and a fellow of St John's College. He has taught numerous courses on mathematics and physics, including courses on vector calculus, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, quantum field theory, elementary particles, and supersymmetry. His research has been mainly on solitons in quantum field theory, including magnetic monopoles and vortices, and he has used the solitons known as Skyrmions to model the complicated structure of atomic nuclei.Nicholas Mee studied theoretical physics and mathematics at the University of Cambridge. He achieved a top distinction in Part III of the Mathematical Tripos of the University of Cambridge and gained his PhD in 1990 in theoretical particle physics, with a thesis titled Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and Geometry. He is the Director of software company Virtual Image and the author of over 50 maths and science multimedia titles including The Code Book on CD-ROM with Simon Singh and Connections in Space with John Barrow and Martin Kemp. He is also author of the award-winning popular science book Higgs Force: Cosmic Symmetry Shattered. Nicholas Mee is well-known in the maths education, popular science and amateur astronomy communities, and his physics blog has a large established readership.

Really outstanding. It's one of the best books I've found for catching up on the physics I should have learned a long time ago.It requires a fair bit of math, but is pretty good at reviewing things just as they're needed, in just enough detail to allow one to "get it".
Thank you, thank you, Prof. Manton and Dr. Mee! This is a wonderful book!I hold three degrees in electrical engineering, including a Ph.D. I minored in Physics and Math in my doctoral program, so I studied much of this material in college. But that was all years ago. Of late, I have been looking for a reasonably self-contained physics book -- a book presenting the math unapologetically -- that brings all that material together and then pushes into areas I did not formally study. This is exactly the kind of book I was looking for! It's perfect!
A great coverage of fundamental physics. Explains and demonstrates the concepts with just right technical and mathematical level to understand the science, while avoiding being buried under extraneous techniques and details which would be necessary for a student planning to work in the field.
Good summary of the physics, but beware of the mathematical level. One reviewer states that the book is accessible with only High School mathematics. The book requires a full calculus sequence (Calculus I, II and III in the U.S.). It's a pity that there are no problems to solve with worked solutions, since that's the only way a student will know whether he/she has really understood the concepts.
