From the Back Cover
Five continents, four million vertical feet, and one woman in search of herselfSteph Jagger had always been a force of nature. Dissatisfied with the passive, limited roles she saw for women as she was growing up, she emulated the men in her life—chasing success, climbing the corporate ladder, ticking the boxes, playing by the rules of a masculine ideal. She was accomplished. She was living “The Dream.” But it wasn’t her dream. Then the universe caught her attention with a sign: raise restraining device. Steph had seen this ski-lift sign countless times, but the familiar words suddenly became a personal call to shake off the life she had built and start a search for something different, something more. Steph soon decided to walk away from the success and security she had worked long and hard to obtain. She quit her job, took a second mortgage on her house, sold everything except her ski equipment and her laptop, and bought a bundle of plane tickets. For the next year, she followed winter up and down the mountains of North and South America, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand on a mission to ski four million vertical feet in a year. What hiking was for Cheryl Strayed, skiing became for Steph: a crucible in which to crack open her life and get to the very center of herself. But she would have to break herself down—first physically, then emotionally—before she could start to rebuild. And it was through this journey of body and soul that she came to understand how to be a woman, how to love, and how to live authentically. Electrifying, heartfelt, and full of humor, Unbound is a transformative memoir—an odyssey of courage and self-discovery that will inspire readers to raise their own restraining devices and pursue the life they are meant to lead.

I first heard an I review with Steph through the Beautiful Writers Group. Her honesty and advice really stuck with me.I finally got around to reading this book after reading far too many business books. This was a great galloping story with unexpected romance, grit, courage, and an on-your-knees snot-fest that was alarmingly familiar. I highlight many paragraphs as fodder for my journals and blogs. I loved this book!!!
This book is so honest and entertaining. It’s one of my very favorite books. It’s a great memoir of a woman finding satisfaction within herself, achieving goals and ultimately finding her own brand of happiness and love.
such an awesome and raw story from Steph. Even if you aren't a skier, there are a lot of takeaways from this book that we can all benefit from. But if you also happen to love skiing, then I rate this book a 7 out of 5.
Such a great story and easy read! I've ended up buying this book for 2 of my friends as gifts as well because her story is so inspiring.
Finally, a memoir about how we don't need to be in the muck of life, broken and in despair, to make a significant change. And the timing of this book couldn't be more perfect! Steph is an inspiration to anyone (male or female) who doesn't want to settle for mediocre. I laughed out loud and wanted to run out the door with a pair of skis in hand and a new sense of adventure into the world. Steph is an inspiration to make changes (big and small) and she gives us permission to have a damn good time living life to its fullest!
Having written my own memoir, I know telling a story in a way that captivates and holds the readers attention is not an easy thing to do, yet this is precisely what Steph has done. The top three things I admire the most about her are: 1) That she had the courage to give up a job that had a promising future in order to follow her heart, not knowing what the future would bring. Most of us have dreams but it is rare when someone actually has the guts to follow them, especially when that dream is to travel the entire world!; 2) Throughout this book she offers amazing tidbits of wisdom that those who are aware will deeply appreciate; and 3) She shares her adventures in the most remarkable way, such that I felt as though I was right there experiencing them with her. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels they need a bit more adventure in their life. Thanks Steph!
Loved this book - inspirational, funny, and well written! Jagger's journey to find fulfillment and sense of "self" is relate-able to anyone who seeks "more" in life. Thoreau once wrote "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation" - Jagger recognized this in herself and decided to face it head on. You don't have to face crisis to seek deeper meaning and understanding in your life. You just need to step up to the starting line.
I really enjoyed this book. Though I'm a long way from snow, I could really appreciate the challenge and adventure of Steph's quest. Unlike many of these types of stories, she remained honest to herself (and the reader) in good times and in bad. I loved her sardonic turn of phrase and she did a great job of describing the different locations - giving us a keen sense of the "personality" of each mountain location. Remarkable.
