#290,218 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
Normally when I've read one of the author's fairy tale retellings, I find myself pulled into the world and actually caring about the characters.Within the first page I noticed that the sentences were short and choppy. I assumed it was because it was told from the perspective of a young orphan and that as the book progressed, so would the sentence structure and the depth of the story.Spoiler alert: it never did.The only reason I finished this book is because it I'm a bit OCD when it comes to finishing books. Thankfully, it was such an easy read, I could do so quickly.I began to question whether I had just been fooling myself about Dickerson's skills with the fairy tale romances. Helpfully, there was an excerpt from one of the other books I've already read at the end of this book. I read a page and noted that the sentences were indeed more complex without the choppy style of The Orphan's Wish.I regret I purchased this on Kindle. At least if it was print I could sell it to a used book store and get some of my money back.
But it's really more than that! Though all her books are romances, I like the unique spin Melanie Dickerson does on each tale. This one dealt with some difficult situations and what the characters went through was often pretty intense. This felt the most down-to-earth out of her stories. I'm not saying that's better or worse, just different and I enjoyed the change of pace. This story felt like it was told a lot more from the guy's perspective than the girl's, unlike her other stories. That is fitting since it's based on Aladdin. Though some might criticize her for changing the original setting of the story, I can't agree. This book is the continuation of a series set in Germany, just like her other stories. I think it would have been neat to have a story set in the Holy Land like the book starts in, but the story continues in Germany because it deals with the same German family as in her other books. Aladdin (the main character) and Abu are from Palestine and I think it was good to show the relations between them and the Germans. This book promotes acceptance and love among people, so even though it's not set in the Middle East, I believe it's a good addition to her series that promotes diversity.
You know when you are reading a book and wonder what else could possibly happen but you are only half way through the book so apparently there is something? This is one of those books. And then wow, the second half of the book each page just gets better and better. The characters are all well developed. Some you love and some you absolutely hate. No fluff here. I loved Aladdin's integrity even from such a young age.I've enjoyed all of Ms Dickerson's Hagenheim series. Getting to revisit old favorite characters like Valten, Duke Wilhelm, the healer Frau Lena. And even trips to the top of the tower to peek at the kingdom once again are fun. This was an amazing story and I think a lot of people are going to enjoy it!
I have read all of Melanie Dickerson's books, and I have always given 5 stars in my reviews. Her books are THAT good! This one was no exception. I love Kirstyn, as she's different than the heroines in previous books. She's caring and shy and a bit unsure of herself or her place in the world, yet she still faces her trials bravely in the end. Hers was a character I could totally relate to. I loved the Aladdin connections and felt they worked very well. I will say that this is the first Melanie Dickerson book that made me want to bawl. Each of Melanie's heroines always manage to find themselves in some sort of dangerous predicament, but in Kirstyn's case, the ordeal is longer-lasting, her personality is far more sensitive, and whole situation is just heart-wrenching. You really feel what she's going through emotionally, both during her trials and even afterward. The ending is very satisfying, however, and Kirstyn finds herself...and love, of course. My 13-year-old daughter, a huge fan of Melanie Dickerson, read the book after I did. She also loved the story and especially liked Kirstyn because she's really shy and sweet and loves children. She also likes Aladdin because he's a hard worker and tries his best in everything he does.
I never would have thought about making the story of Alladin a childhood sweethearts tale, but it turns out it's the fairy tale retelling I never knew I wanted! This story had me eager for the next page from the very beginning. Alladin was portrayed so believably, and I thought it was interesting the way the author made his story so similar to that of Joseph in the Bible. I also wasn't expecting the tale be so filled with suspense! And Abu being a little orphan boy was a nice touch - I loved him! My only critique was that there was a section towards the end that I felt got a little preachy. I have read almost every book by this author, and she normally weaves faith into her stories seamlessly. It's my pet peeve when Christian books sort of stop the plot and go "now for our very special message", and I felt this book fell into that trap. It's the only reason I gave the book four stars instead of five. One of my favorites by this author, for sure!
Melanie has done it again! I have always loved Melanie's books. Through all of her books I always flavor 'The Fairest Beauty.' With reading this book between two childhood friends i would have to say this my new favorite book by her. I strongly encourage you to read this book. I loved this book. I couldnt keep the book down! I finished this book in less then two days of reading. This book is good for young adult and adults. There is no sextaul scenes. No bad words. There is a couple of really extreme scenes in this book. Could be a little scary for younger readers. I just turned 16. I was jumpy while reading this book. The scene is when the duke's daughter is kidnapped. Even after her kidnap she jumps when hears loud noises. Also, she gets scared when he brother grabs her wrist. Over all, this is written wonderful! Go and buy this book and go through a new adventure! Melanie tthank you for writing yet another amazing book!
