Review
"[Barry writes] in language of surpassing beauty. . . . It is like a song, with all the pulse of the Irish language, a song sung liltingly and plaintively from the top of Ben Bulben into the airy night." —Dinitia Smith, The New York Times "Barry recounts all this in prose of often startling beauty. Just as he describes people stopping in the street to look at Roseanne, so I often found myself stopping to look at the sentences he gave her, wanting to pause and copy them down." —Margot Livesey, The Boston Globe "Luminous and lyrical."—O, The Oprah Magazine"A great novel about a ninety-nine-year-old woman...trying to understand the truth of her life...Along the way are some of the most beautifully formed prose passages I have ever read." —Thomas Cahill, author of How the Irish Saved Civilization "Written in captivating, lyrical prose, Barry's novel is both a sparkling literary puzzle and a stark cautionary tale of corrupted power." —Publishers Weekly"Part of Barry's artistry is the sheer poetry of his prose, now heart-stoppingly lyrical, now heart-poundingly thrilling. An unforgettable portrait of mid-twentieth-century Ireland." —Booklist"It is a poignant story of the horrors and hypocrisies of rural Ireland, the cruelties of civil war, and the pernicious influence of the priesthood. Roseanne is a vivid and engaging protagonist, and Barry makes rich use of the circumlocutions of his native tongue." —The Daily Mail (London)"Dark, awkward, and exceptionally finely written."—The Telegraph (London)"In this book, the worlds each character builds are significantly, tantalizingly estranged from each other. The novel's delight lies in the way in which the two tales—and, eventually the two lives—begin to coalesce, to the utter surprise of both the characters and the reader."—The Economist

This all took place in early 20th century Ireland, a primitive place, with very little in the way of rights for women and children. A bright beautiful woman threatens the old fashioned values of her village by existing. The priest works for years to have her marriage annulled, she is committed for her entire life to an insane asylum. In the book she is age 100, looking back at her life...with grace humor wisdom and thank goodness still some anger. The beauty of the book lays in the way the author views the world expressed through his characters. There were many many phrases I underlined and read again and again for the wisdom and comfort they provide.
A Psalm of Life against all odds. This is an incredibly beautiful, incredibly emotive and heartbreaking story of Ireland and the resilient spirit of Irish people...all that energy, and their deep and complex relationship with life, love, humor, tribulation, and death and resurrection. This is the kind of book that I wish I could memorize every word, every thought, every expression in it. The depth of sorrow and enduring love in the stories of main characters (no spoiler) is remarkable and written very visually, and very polished. Its emotional impact will last for a long time.
One I got the rhythm of the alternating from one speaker to another, I enjoyed this book immensely. Tje only negative comment I would say is regarding the cover. For me, this was a deterrant to me selecting the book. I dont think it is a good representation of the contents of the story. It is a very tender and moving story with what I considered a rather surprising ending. Sebastian Barry is a skilled story teller, quietly descriptive. It is difficult to say if this was a page turner. I was just too busy with other obligations to read much in one sitting. I was always happy to get back to the book and was easily able to pick up where I left off.
Brilliantly rendered; could not put it down, which meant missing my subway stop for three days running. Still haunted by the story and looking forward to re-reading it.
Sebastian Barry crafts a tale of intrigue through the minds and hearts of two characters, who at first glance seem to be from different poles, but who in reality are seeking the same things: self knowledge and understanding. Masterfully written.
What a long and twisted tale! Mysteries of both the past and the present are explored, solved and merged leading the reader on a journey of heartbreak, loneliness, injustice and prejudice. The abrupt and less than satisfactory ending seems to mirror one of the themes of the book as a whole: life is what it is. It is not fair or just or even sane, but it must be survived against all odds. If you have seen the movie, just know that the screen writer may have not actually read it he book, so strangely different as the details large and small between the two.
What a great book. It takes you through the life of an amazing woman and keeps you guessing the whole way through. I absolutely recommend this book. So well written.
As I have Irish heritage in Roscommon, I found this book interesting and with an element of mystery. I thought it was well written and sympathetic to Rosanne, the main character. Rosanne, was a “victim†of the times and the culture but she was a good person lived her life he best she could.
