Leslie P. Gartner, Professor of Anatomy (Ret.), Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Dental School of the University of Maryland has received numerous teaching awards and is the author of "Textbook of Histology, 4th Edition" (2016) which has been translated into six languages. He also wrote  "Color Atlas of Histology, 7th Edition" (2016).  The atlas, which is used by medical schools all over the world, has been translated into eleven languages. He also coauthored "Cell Biology and Histology, 7th Edition "(2015) with James L. Hiatt which has been translated into six languages. Dr. Gartner was the Histology consultant to "Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 28th Edition" (2006). He also coauthored "Textbook of Neuroanatomy, 2nd ed." (2016) with Maria A. Patestas. Dr. Gartner has written numerous other books for Medical and Dental students including "The Autonomic Nervous System Made Ludicrously Simple", "The Skull: A Text Atlas," "Text Atlas of the Brain Made Ludicrously Simple,  "Oral Histology and Embryology, 3rd ed" (2015), and coauthored "Textbook of Head and Neck Anatomy, 4th ed." Great textbook! I find it offers sufficiently comprehensive explanations, and even what I would consider review of material that should already be known before reading this textbook.The textbook has great pictures, but I wish they were printed in slightly higher resolution, or bigger pictures.
Was searching high and low on a textbook on Microscopic Anatomy. All have been a disappointment, but this one.It has colored pictures, that are clearly labeled, and a breakdown on the different tissues of the body in an organized and easy to read manner.The only thing lacking is that it is weak with mentioning the epithelium in the different types of tissues. But overall it is a perfect companion to my lecture.Be warned it is not an Histology atlas, is more of a read with some pictures, a textbook.Very pleased with purchase.
I purchased this book as an optional reading for my histology course. I did not use it as much as might be necessary for other courses but I was influenced by the fact that it is soft cover, small and lightweight making it easier to carry, and thus more likely to be read. I have used another histology book which was concise and very readable, this one is similar except that the images are in color and there are more diagrams to illustrate the histology in addition to microscopy images.

This is probably one of my favorite biology text books. The photographs are well done and well placed (there is a lot of them, which is important to a histology course) and the text can be understood with minimum anatomy background.
Definitely a great book. Solid information. I bought this book for my histology classes in medical school. The only thing is that many of the pictures and descriptions are of animal (mice, monkeys, etc) histology, not human.
Okay and basic read. If you are a MERPer, get it in advance and read chapters 1-3 before starting the program.
