In Plain Sight by Dan WillisThis is a well-written, well-conceived bit of urban fantasy. The setting is a parallel 1930s New York. Alex Lockerby is a private investigator living hand to mouth by taking cases that come his way and occasionally consulting for the NYPD.He's also a "runewright." In this version of the world, there are two kinds of magic. One kind involves the writing of runes - which are arcane geometric drawings that when ignited can perform all kinds of useful magic. The other is sorcery whereby sorcerers control elemental power, such as electricity or cold. People who can write runes are rare, but sorcerers are even rarer and far, far more powerful because while runes fade away over time, sorcery does not.Willis follows the standard hardboiled detective format pioneered by Hammet and Chandler by stringing together three apparently unconnected plot lines and adding a femme fatale. Except that this detective is far too nice and generous to be Sam Spade or Phillip Marlow. This story does not involve a question of existential evil, rather evil is plainly identifiable on one side, and Lockerby is on the other side, helping widows and orphans. The plot is engaging and it works. When I thought we were done, Willis added in a wrinkle that took the story up a notch.Obviously, this is the first installment of a series. Willis has introduced us to the main and supporting characters and did a nice job of grounding us in the setting of a 1930s that looks a lot like the one that our grandparents knew, but is wildly different.
OK this is my first book by this author, the story followed a well beaten formula:1) Detective living hand to mouth, albeit an arcane one2) Hostile police department3) One ally in the PD4) Pretty ultra-competent but viper tongued secretary5) Sidekick6) Stupid plot7) Bad guys are German of courseBut despite all that the author turns this into a book that will keep you up late at night finishing it. The protagonist is an arcane rune casting detective set in a major US city in the mid 1920's. He has three major plot lines running at the same time and they all tie together at the end as you knew that they would. They plot gets more idiotic at the end as he ties this mess together. The theory of magic is plausible. The magic world is split into three fields, rune casters who can perform ephemeral magic feats, alchemists who make the usual potions, and the powerful but rare sorcerers. The story will involve all three by the end.But he does this very well and if you are a fan of Butcher then by all means grab this book, especially since Dresden seems to have hit a dead end.
The protagonist is a rune-maker, a flexible but generally not a terribly powerful mage. He is a detective and there are multiple mysteries going on simultaneously:a] A disease constructed through magic killed everyone at a soup kitchenb] A man is missing and his sister hires our detective to look for himc] A murder investigation of a guy who works for a major import/export warehoused] Then two more mysteries branch out from this. This was a very tightly written book. Parts of this I could figure out, but other parts I could not until revealed by the author. The clues were mostly there but were not obviously related.Six super powerful sorcers are in New York. They use their powers for money (one makes things which broadcasts power, another makes tiny bits of metal that operate as refigeration/cooling devices, etc.....I finished this in a couple of days.Seldom have I read a book with this complex of a plot so clearly laid out in so few pages.
This was an example of what happens when someone takes the time to make sure their world has rules, consistency, and makes internal sense. The result is a well-done detective novel in a pre-war New York (and world) with magic. And not just one flavor - several non-overlapping flavors. Each has a place, and none seem to be too overpowered, or, better, each has powers the others cannot fathom (suffice to say that when the hero does the big thing towards the end, even the high and mighty type is all 'but HOW!?!?!?').The mystery was well constructed, and I suspect the 'I see this coming' was intentional - it isn't hard to see, but done well enough that you think you are not supposed to see it. The cases tie up nicely, with loose enough ends to allow a revisit in the future, if needed, but not so loose that this is not a fully self-contained book. All in all, if you like mage noir style novels, this is one that you want to be sure to read.
If Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe had just a wee bit of magic to help solve cases it would be like this. We follow Alex Lockerby into a suspicious death and he calls foul immediately, from there on we get wrapped up in some strange twists and surprising reveals in an alternate magical world. Check it out! Well worth your time!
