Amazon.com Review

Unless you slept through the 1990s, you probably know that Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls ran roughshod over the NBA for the better part of a decade. Like the Lakers before them and the Celtics before that, the Bulls have sustained a level of play that is simply unmatched by their contemporaries. But there's a dark cloud to this red and black lining. In writing Blood on the Horns, author Roland Lazenby followed the team through the '97-'98 campaign as they struggled to attain their sixth NBA title in the past seven years. While it was no secret that a rift had for years existed between the Bulls' management and players, by season's end Lazenby found that bad blood, bruised egos, and harsh words had created an untenable and openly hostile atmosphere. "Where there's money and success and vast public attention, there are usually immensely complicated personality conflicts." And that goes double for the Chicago Bulls. To decipher the mixed messages surrounding this internecine power struggle, Lazenby conducted extensive interviews with superstars and role players, determining who said what to whom, when it happened, and why. The story he uncovers is an intriguing melodrama, equal parts fascination and despair. Men may very well be boys, but it's shocking to find one of the greatest dynasties in the history of basketball tearing itself apart over what amounts to a pissing match. --George Laney

For every 90's Bulls fan this is a must read! Gets you inside information on how the last season of Michael playing with the Bulls developed, back in the day we didn't twitter and the media exposure was nowhere near of what we have today!Great, great book

Enjoyed this item. Very pleased that item arrived timely and as described. I would be willing to do business with this vendor in the future.

Great condition

Thoroughly enjoyed getting my first glimpse into the personalities, mechanics and politics in both the nba and the Chicago bulls.

Great read. Very interesting to go behind the scenes of one of the top teams in nba recent history.Definitely recommend this book

One of the best sports books ever written. Lazenby brings them all up close and personal. Couldn't put it down.

Really interesting read with great insight to the struggle within one of the all time great dynasties in sports history.

I read the first chapters of the book from a friend who loaned it to me. Sorry Amazon but the price was right. It provides a more real version of the inner workings of the Bulls situation when they won the titles. If you're caught up with Jordan being perfect, well, you may not want to read this book. Jordan is no question a superb basketball player; one of the best. But basically he loves himself a bit too much, was a total jerk, had little respect for his bosses, was very demeaning to Krause and his fellow teammates, etc. Jordan did a great job in dealing with the media to get them on his side and hence, he was successful in making himself extremely influential to the public and using that to destroy those such as Krause who he didn't like. Apparently MJ still harvests a hate against Krause as he made another stab at him when MJ got into the hall of fame a few years ago. Jackson was the master coach who is great in coaching inflated egos of big stars but was mostly hands off in the inner workings of the players' relationship with their owners and bosses. Many had hoped he would be the go between to maintain balance between management and the players. Krause is the GM who put the team together and made excellent trades to improve the team to ensure they can compete with the changes from other teams. He was very effective in getting the perfect coach for MJ and in recruiting excellent supporting players. And there's the unsung master Tex Winter who created the triangle offense that allowed MJ and later Kobe to excel. So how did the Bulls become so successful in the 90's? Many would say it's because of MJ. It's actually a combination of things such as Krause finding the right coach and players; Jackson as a great coach; Tex with his very effective triangle offense; of course MJ who is so naturally talented; Pippen who is a superstar in his own right; and the supporting players who did their part on the court and just as important allowed MJ to ridicule them individually but didn't make it a big deal. The interviews in the book were excellent as they provided a more factual basis for what really happened. It's a great read if you enjoyed the NBA Bulls during the 90's and prefer a less biased discussion of it. Again, if you're a die hard MJ fan, then you may want to pass in reading this book. But if you want to take a peep past the mask of what we see and hear via the media, then this book is a very good one. I always find it interesting to read about how things really are.
