First and foremost, this is a fun read. The entire series (21-books) never drags or repeats. Each story is unique and continues the plot line established in Book 1, "Death Becomes Her". While there are sections in all of the books that make you want to read several chapters so you can come to the conclusion of an action scene, there are lots of places you can put the book down and pick it up later.I grew up on Space Opera (Doc Smith and the Lensman series, and continued with Lee & Miller's Liaden series) and am also a huge fan of Military Sci-Fi. How wonderful to find a series with a bit of both. The emphasis in this series is on the story and the characters. And yes, the characters are unique and supportive of the main character. Throughout the series you see them grow and develop. Unlike some authors, Mr. Anderle doesn't develop a character just to kill him/her off in the next book. The reader has an opportunity to engage with the characters and follow them throughout this extensive series. Several of the characters have spin-off series (e.g., Nomad series, Bad Company series) so you can find out more about the character or follow their exploits that are related to but independent of the main story line.Book #1 is required to understand and appreciate the entire story line. What if Werewolves and Vampires actually exist? What if, just like real people, there are good, bad, and indifferent members of their society? What kind of interrelationships would develop? How about aliens? What would advanced technology bring into the mixture? This series has it all. Mr. Anderle sets up a universe with a social/economic/political setup similar to Earth - i.e., there are bullies and victims, 'politicians' who have their own interests foremost as well as those interested in serving others, etc. Now bring in a group of long-lived characters who want to help others, have the skills and talents to make a difference, and the aliens and technology to go boldly forth. After reading the first 4 books in the Brownstone series, I wasn't expecting much from this series. I was glad to find that this series doesn't use our most offensive words in completely trivial situations. I just finished book 2 in this set and, while the language is colorful, it is completely authentic within the settings of the books. You DON'T expect people who risk their lives on a daily basis to speak as if they were in church. I'm fine with that.There is what might be considered an excessive amount of violence in this series but I doubt many of us were reading these books hoping to find dialogues about book clubs and baby showers. ;-) There is enough ho hum chatter to create pauses between scenes of massive carnage, but that's about it. In most cases, even the ho hum chatter is funny. If I want excruciating, mind numbing attention to detail, I'll read David Weber. A few words are left out here and there, but in today's world of self publishing I have to give Michael a B+.There are a LOT of books in this series and if they maintain the quality I've seen thus far, I will be a very satisfied reader for quite a while. :-)
I cant stop reading this book / series. I absolutely love it!!I finished the 1st book then went straight into the series.I have not been this entertained since Anne Rice or Laurell K. Hamilton.If you like a kick-ass supernatural hero...this is for you.
i must say i've never had more fun with a sassy set of fangs and a bunch of fur. Bethany is all and more than i could have ever wanted in character. what a life she has been given by a man who has been living millennia. and the posse she collects because of who she chooses to be and what she chooses to believe in are hilarious and scary.
Seriously. Really, REALLY well done. The first book sets up the characters and situation and just runs from there. Literally RUNS. Lots of action, fight sequences, explosions, and very creative swearing. The swearing is one of the best parts! Equal parts thriller, sci-fi, touching, and hilarious. I really can't recommend this enough.
I thought this style of story with this style of writing is great. Enough window dressing to tell a good story without bogging it down with extraneous bs. Sort of a literary First person shooter. Fun, cheap, entertainment; and there is nothing wrong with that.
The only thing that would make this boxset better would be more books! I love this series and was so happy to get this many books in one place and one price. It's awesome!
I love Bethany Ann...best "vampire" I've ever read about and normally I don't like these types of books. I'm so glad I found this series and I can't wait to read more!
